Scissor Lift
A scissor lift is a type of aerial work platform that uses a series of crossed, folding supports in a pantograph design to lift a platform straight up and down. They are commonly used in industries like construction, warehousing, and maintenance to provide a safe and stable way to access elevated areas.
How it works
- The lift's crisscrossing metal supports, which look like scissors, extend vertically when activated by a hydraulic, electric, or pneumatic power source.
- This movement raises the platform to a working height, but unlike some other aerial lifts, a scissor lift can only move up and down, not horizontally.
- Some models can have platform extensions to provide extra reach and workspace.
Common uses
-
Construction:
Installing drywall, painting ceilings, and performing electrical or HVAC work.
-
Maintenance:
Repairing lighting systems, cleaning windows, and accessing hard-to-reach machinery.
-
Warehousing and logistics:
Loading and unloading materials from trucks and retrieving items from high shelves.
-
Events:
Hanging signs and installing lighting or sound equipment.
Key features and types
-
Power:
Available in electric (quiet and emission-free, good for indoors) or diesel-powered models (powerful, suitable for outdoor use).
-
Stability:
Provides a very stable vertical lift, especially for tasks that don't require horizontal movement.
-
Load capacity:
Many have large platforms and high weight capacities, allowing them to carry multiple people and materials.
-
Terrain:
Some are designed for flat, stabilized floors, while "rough terrain" models have heavy-duty tires to handle uneven ground.
